Garlic also known as “Kitunguu- saumu” is a cool-season crop that prefers moderate temperatures and well-drained soil. In Kenya, garlic can be grown successfully in most regions with suitable climatic conditions. Here are the ideal climate conditions for growing garlic in Kenya:

  • 1. Temperature: Garlic thrives in moderate temperatures. The optimal temperature range for growing garlic is between 12°C and 24°C at the initial stages and up to 30°C during the bulb formation stage.Day Length: Garlic requires a long day length for optimum growth. It prefers at least 12 to 14 hours of daylight during its growing period.
  • 2. Rainfall: Garlic is sensitive to excessive moisture and requires well-drained soil. In Kenya, it is best to grow garlic during the dry season to avoid excessive rainfall. Garlic prefers a moderate amount of water, and irrigation can be provided when necessary. While rain fed garlic production can be successful,it is more efficient to plan for irrigation . Garlic can do well under drip irrigation, furrow irrigation and basin irrigation. Though overhead irrigation and rain hose irrigation are options, they lead to susceptibility to fungal infections.
  • 3. Altitude: Garlic can be grown at various altitudes in Kenya, but it generally thrives in areas with altitudes between 500 and 2,000 meters above sea level making most parts of kenya favorable for producing this crop.
  • 4. Soil: Garlic prefers well-drained, sandy loam soil with good organic matter content. The soil should have a pH level between 6 and 7.5. Adequate soil preparation, including proper drainage, is essential for successful garlic cultivation. It is advisable to conduct a soil test before cultivation .A soil test will show all the necessary changes required to improve the soil for optimum garlic condition. We offer soil testing services countrywide.
