When choosing land for growing garlic, there are several factors to consider. Here are some important ones:

  • Soil Quality: Garlic thrives in well-drained soil with good fertility. We conduct a soil test to determine the pH level, organic matter content, and nutrient availability. Garlic prefers a pH range between 6.0 and 7.5. The soil should have good drainage.
  • Sunlight Exposure: Garlic requires full sunlight to grow optimally. Choose a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Avoid areas with excessive shade, as it can lead to poor growth and lower yields.
  • Climate: Medium to high altitudes of 500 to 2000 meters above sea level are ideal for growing garlic. Additionally, for proper bulb development, garlic needs high temperatures of 30oC. However, cooler temperatures are best in the early stages, as they promote the vegetative growth required for plant establishment. Because of this, the best temperature range for producing garlic is between 12 and 24 0C. It is important to remember that excessive rain and humidity hinder the vegetative development and bulb formation of garlic. As a result, the crop will thrive in regions with low rainfall, maybe with irrigation used in the first stages when water demand is at its highest.
  • Water Availability: Adequate water supply is crucial for garlic growth, especially during the early stages and bulb development. Ensure that the chosen land has a reliable water source, such as access to irrigation or proximity to a water body. We offer drip irrigation systems and installation services to farmers country wide.
  • Drainage: Good soil drainage is essential to prevent waterlogging, as garlic bulbs are susceptible to rotting in overly wet conditions. Avoid areas prone to flooding or with poor natural drainage.
  • Land Slope: Select a land with a gentle slope to allow for better water drainage and prevent the pooling of water around the garlic plants. Steep slopes can lead to erosion and uneven water distribution.
  • Pest and Disease History: Investigate the land’s history for any past pest or disease problems that might affect garlic cultivation. Avoid areas that have a known history of soil-borne diseases or pests, such as white rot or nematodes. It is advisable to avoid re-planting garlic in the same area that had garlic or onions to avoid soil-borne diseases.
  • Accessibility: Consider the accessibility of the land for maintenance and harvesting. It should have proper road access, proximity to storage facilities, and be easy to navigate for machinery or equipment.
  • Crop Rotation: If you plan to grow garlic as part of a crop rotation system, consider the previous crops planted on the land. Avoid areas that recently had Allium crops (onion, garlic, etc.) to minimize the risk of disease carryover.
